List of Foods To Avoid With Gout

It's has long been considered that purine rich food is bad for gout. Unfortunately most of the food that we like to eat including meat and seafood are purine rich as are some of the vegetables like spinach that are considered very healthy for the body. 

Recent research seems to suggest that there is no direct correlation between purine and gout, because certain food that contain purine brings on gout attacks, while others do not. It is therefore hasty to cut off all food that contains purine from the diet as this may lead to other complications. 

One correlation that has been noticed is that any diet that is bad for the heart also brings on gout. Whether this is a direct bearing on each other or not is not known, but food that cause cardiovascular problems are known triggers of gout while others that may contain purine but are not considered dangerous for the heart are not a problem. 

Thus forming a list of food to avoid with gout is a little difficult. The Mayo clinic implies that although there are a number of causes for gout, including genetic and inherited traits, it is more the lifestyle of the individual that matters more.

For example regular exercise has been found to reduce incidences of gout, and not even bring it on in otherwise high risk people. In the same way consuming fruits that are high in anthocyanan like cherries have been found to eliminate incidences of gout almost entirely. 

Drinking a lot of water is also considered helpful because it will help the kidneys flush out uric acid from the blood. And while coffee and other fruit juices have no deleterious effect, products like carbonated beverages and others that are sweetened with fructose have been found to be very bad. 

High fat and cholesterol levels in the blood, caused by a high fat diet may also bring on attacks, but once again, regular exercise seems to negate the ill effects of quite a few of the “bad” foods. 

Consuming alcohol also seems to put people at higher risk and reduced calorie diets seems to make people more prone to gout attacks. In most of these cases however just ensuring that they are eating a healthy diet, and getting regular exercise seems to “reset” their system so that they do not get any more gout attacks.
